Ubuntu 9.04 64bit

Well it has been about a week now and my upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 has been overall pleasant. This go around I opted for the 64bit version to take full advantage of my CPU and decided to go for the ext4 filesystem. Was not sure how that change would work so I spent a full 3 days backing up data.

After the install I did notice the system to be more responsive and noticeable quicker. Isn’t that what an OS upgrade should do, so many years with Windows and every upgrade seemed to slow you system down and major upgrades needed better hardware.

The only downside so far is the lack of iPhone support, which is not really the fault of linux but rather Apple’s reluctance to let people use the iPhone the way they want. I have heard many a fanboy say how locked down Windows was and all the mentions of DRM, never realizing that Apple had the same restrictions and DRM schemes. That has changed some with iTunes now giving you access to DRM free music but you had to pay for that upgrade.

I love my iPhone but it may be time for a change, it has taken a while but the rest of the market is starting to “get it” and catch up.

The only thing I needed to get my 64bit Ubuntu working was having to install the 32 bit libraries so that non 64 bit applications would work. Adobe even has an alpha version of Flash for 64bit linux available Adobe Labs -  Alpha 64-bit Adobe Flash Player 10.
